Dry Eye Disease

Dry Eye Disease is one of the most common ocular surface conditions seen in eye clinics worldwide. It occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tear film becomes unstable and evaporates too quickly. Tears are essential not only for comfort, but also for clear vision and protection of the eye surface.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Dry Eyes?

Patients with dry eyes may experience:

  • Burning, stinging, or gritty sensation

  • Redness and irritation

  • Intermittent blurred vision, often worse with screen use

  • Excessive watering (a reflex response to dryness)

  • Foreign body sensation

  • Light sensitivity

Symptoms typically worsen in air-conditioned environments, during prolonged screen use, or late in the day.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

Dry eye disease can affect all age groups, but its prevalence increases significantly with age. One of the most important high-risk groups is post-menopausal women.

This increased incidence is strongly linked to hormonal changes, particularly reduced estrogen and androgen levels, which negatively affect tear production and the oil-secreting meibomian glands. As a result, tears evaporate faster, leading to chronic dryness.

Other important risk factors include:

  • Increasing age (especially >50 years)

  • Female gender

  • Post-menopausal status

  • Prolonged digital screen use

  • Contact lens wear

  • Previous eye surgery (e.g., LASIK, cataract surgery)

  • Autoimmune diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome)

  • Certain medications (antihistamines, antidepressants)

Early evaluation and targeted treatment are key—especially in older adults and post-menopausal women.

What Are The Non-Invasive Tests for Dry Eyes?

Traditional dry eye tests often involved touching the eye, which could be uncomfortable and unreliable. Today, non-invasive dry eye diagnostics allow accurate evaluation without disturbing the tear film.

One such advanced system that is available at our centre is the Sunkindom Dry Eye Analyzer (DA3). This test is completely non-contact and painless, making it ideal for routine clinical use.

The DA3 system evaluates 7 key parameters non-invasively, including:

  • Tear film stability

  • Tear break-up time

  • Tear volume

  • Lipid layer quality

  • Meibomian gland structure

  • Blink dynamics

  • Ocular surface condition

The test is quick, patient-friendly, and provides objective data that helps in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

What Are Treatment Options?

Dry eye treatment is individualized and depends on the underlying cause and severity. Common management strategies include:

  • Preservative-free artificial tears

  • Lipid-based eye drops for evaporative dry eye

  • Warm compresses and lid hygiene for meibomian gland dysfunction

  • Anti-inflammatory eye drops when inflammation is present

  • Nutritional supplements (omega-3 fatty acids)

  • Lifestyle modifications, such as regular blinking and screen breaks

With accurate diagnosis and modern testing, dry eye disease can be effectively controlled, significantly improving comfort, vision, and quality of life.
